Keyword Selection and Analysis
Do you know which keyword phrases your customers are using to search for your products or services? It is very easy to make the mistake of coming up with a list of keywords that YOU would search for, but are they really the ones your potential customers are using?
Keyword Selection and Analysis tools
We take very seriously the business of Keyword phrase
selection. In fact, it is in effect our specialty, and we pride ourselves for the level of relevance
that we add to the process for each and every keyword considered. The SEO tools below are excellent
for what they do, and each are really optimized for a different target audience. However, they are
all just programs, none have human help behind them. Keep in mind that you will be the only thing
deciding how relevant each keyword is, and that's the most important step in the whole selection
process.
The classics never die. Overture pulls keywords
from Yahoo, Iwon, Lycos, Msn, Altavista, Alltheweb, and many other smaller Engines, giving it the most
robust sampling of all. It doesn't pull from Google or AOL though, but gives what is inarguably the
best representation of the numbers out there for your Keyword phrase(s).
This Keyword generation tool was made for people
who are considering a Google AdWords advertising account, but they don't force you to sign up by this
point in the process. Slightly different than the Overture version above, it actually lets you
"drill down" from general keywords to a more specific set of keywords, better representing your
site's likely response on Google. It doesn't, however, list the amount of hits the keywords gets,
they are listed in order of popularity. It does include AOL's results within it though, so more and
more people are using this source over Overture's these days.
Best bet? Use them both and then factor them together.
Keyword suggestion tool from Digital Point
This handy tool will show you the results of your query from both Wordtracker and Overture for
determining which phrases are searched most often. Enter a search phrase below to
see how often it's searched for, as well as get suggestions for alternate (but similar) keywords.
(Then hit Enter for results)
Misspelled Keyword tool from SEOChat
This tool from
SEOChat, (A PR8 site that is inarguably the highest SEO-themed website on Earth) helps those of you
who are looking for 'the edge' to find looked-over site keywords. It lets you search for keywords and keyword
phrases that are like your suggestion, but misspelled. Want to know how people are likely to misspell the
word "Commerce?" Pop that keyword into the box below and get ready for a laugh... (Although it's still more
useful than entertaining.)
GoRank's Ontological word finder
GoRank.com's 'Ontology finder' is basically a
thesaurus that is powered by Google. This would be an odd tool if you were writing a paper, but
it is perfect for those of us researching our website keywords. It checks the top 1000 Google
results for your keyword(s) by running a related word query. All you have to do is simply put
your keyword or keyword phrase in the blank and it will show you some great alternative words
to use in place of each.
Outside of our own service,
Wordtracker
is clearly the creator of the highest quality Keywords. They even have a free demo for your first set
of keywords, so I felt they should be included in our freeware database considering that it's a whole site's
free acquisition of keywords... And no one ever really complains about their prices if you ever need to go
back for more.
Wordtracker has ways to not only generate highly-profitable
words for your website, but they also help you make them relevant. Their service is the very best that
an online keyword selection service can be without bringing human minds into the selection process.
-Which is basically the only difference between our keyword selection service and theirs.
(Requires a
Google API account) This is used to check Search Engines for keyword ranking and track reqests and performance for
your various keywords over time, using the commercial-grade Google API for impressive results. A very
helpful & impressive tool. Kudos to DigitalPoint Solutions for this fine piece of work!
Keywords Live
This is an impressive tool.
AnalogX Keywords Live shows you the top 100 keywords and phrases
being used on several popular search engines on the web. - In real time! Forget worrying about last months, or even last weeks numbers; with Keyword Live you
see what's happening RIGHT NOW, no guesswork, no hassle. This one-of-a-kind tool is great for any web
developer seeking a hot topic to build a page on, or even for just a casual user who wants to know
what's hot right now. It's also perfect for any web page builder who worries over if their chosen keywords
are still performing as well as the day he/she picked them.
Only drawback: You must
leave it running for a while, a week is optimal, to get the most usable numbers.
(Just the nature of the beast, this can't be improved upon.)

DOMAIN NAME TOOLS
We thought long and hard about where to put these, but it only made sense that you'd
want to choose a domain name at the same time you are deciding on Keywords.
(Disclaimer: Your domain name does not need to be a keyword, it's more
important for it to be a brand name. It does help in some engines though!)
Domain Name Analyzer
Softnik
Technologies' Domain Name Analyzer is a fun tool for finding the best domain name(s) for your product
or business. Many people refer to Domain Name Analyzer as 'the best software for searching through domain
names. It creates domain names from lists, articles, web pages, etc... A very easy to use and even
entertaining tool.
Software specs:
Domain Name Status Reporter
Domain Name Status Reporter, also from those great guys
at Softnik Technologies, will allow you to monitor the domain name
status of hundreds of global top level domains, all at once. It's very helpful when you are domain
shopping, especially in large quantities, and for names that aren't available yet. The supported domains
include .Com, .Net, .org, .edu, .info and .biz. This unique program allows you to paste a ton of domain
names right into a field and WHOIS them all at once! -It even allows you to set which WHOIS server you
want to use for each!

WEB HOST EVALUATION TOOLS
Host Evaluator
Choose your host yet? For any business that isn't big
enough to host it's own files on the internet reliably, this can be a make-or-break-us decision. I've used
about 20 differnt web hosts since 1993, and not a single one of them did everything right...
HostEvaluator.com has written this program to provide you with serious, heavy-duty comparrison between
hosts for your website. A wizard-style layout asks you questions about the hosts that you are considering
to use. A couple of questions are difficult to answer, such as how you rate their customer support, but
the rest are easy enough, requiring just a few minutes to answer per host. (Once you have the support
question answered...) Then, it spends at least 12 minutes per host, preferably more, testing out the
host's capabilities online for you, and in the end can draw you a comprehensive graph weighing them
against each other. -Speed, support, connection, prices, everything. You also have the option to
generate a full, customized comparison report, 'Vehix' style, in HTML format, that is professional
looking enough to show to your manager! -A very useful tool when searching for just the right host for
your next website project. Although freeware, it has a funny "Guilt Meter" that builds up over time, and
when you click on it, it asks for a donation... Silly, but completely out of the way.
